For my grandson, baby Roberto - love 'Lita
At the grand age of 50
my grandson has helped me
re-discover
old, fanciful things.
I like chasing dancing butterflies,
while running amidst giant swaying sunflowers
I like lying on verdant green grassy knolls
and watching lazy, cotton clouds
float by
I like raising my face to the sky
tongue held out
to capture complex crystal snowflakes
I like constructing roly poly snowmen
with smiling, black button eyes
and vegetable noses
I like pantomiming
a silly penguin's walk
and gaping at fluttering fireflies
in my grandmother's old jelly jars
I like hot chocolate, with marshmallows
and warm, gooey raisin oatmeal cookies
or fairy tales and movies
with odd words
like fi fo fum and supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
but what I like best
is lying on my bed
bundled in a patch work quilt
as my grandson lies next to me
his baby limbs akimbo
quietly and snugly sleeping.
